"Perth duo-sometimes-trio Erasers have long since made their mark as masters of repetition; they make forging blissful pop songs out of two notes sound easy (it’s not). Though their tried and tested approach begs the question: how do you progress within a sound based on minimal reiteration?
The answer lies in a relentless honing, tweaking and re-imagining of the formula: in other words, Erasers’ new four-song EP Twin Spurs. It ushers you in with ‘Migration Bells’, a wash of nature-documentary drone with the ever-present chiming of some unseen monk’s bronze rattle. Soon, ‘Summer Beds’ (a cover, funnily enough, of bandmate Andrew Sinclair’s solo tune) teases you with what could be a spritely indie rock hook, instead drawing itself into a shimmering horizon of melody and undulating texture.
‘Frozen Again’ revives the ‘classic’ Erasers sound, but they’ve nailed percussion reverb and guitar tone like never before. It’s more confident, less rigid, than similar compositions have sounded in the past – and in an unexpected twist of fate, Rebecca’s voice ends up recalling Marble Index-era Nico. Closer ‘Emerald Skies’ is the first song to grant you a truly driving beat – and not just any beat, but an 8-bit tribal percussion loop, the music you’d have grown up with if they’d made a Super Nintendo game about performing moonlit shamanic rituals in the desert. Which they should have. Too bad.
If Erasers never make another record (and I hope they do), they can sleep easy having given us releases like Twin Spurs. Re-approaching repetition without repeating themselves – sounds like a magic trick, and it kind of is." - Lyndon Blue, The Thousands Perth
